Emperor Kotoku of Japan
Saturday, June 7th, 2008Emperor Kotoku was the 36th emperor of Japan to the traditional order of succession lasted from 645 through 654. Emperor Kotoku was a descendant of Emperor Bidatsu. In 645 he ascended to the throne two days after Prince Naka no Oe assassinated Soga no Iruka in the court of Kogyoku. He was a son of Prince Chinu by Princess Kibitsuhime. Before Emperor Kotoku ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne his personal name was Karu-no-Oji also known as Heaven Myriad Abundant Sun. He ruled from July 12, 645 until his death in 654.During 645 he created a new city called Naniwa and moved the capital from Yamato province to this new city (see Nara). Naniwa had a sea port and was good for diplomatic and foreign trade activities.
